Skin CLINIC
by Karen D. Jennings
Dear Karen,
All my life I have had old looking hands for my age. When I was younger I spent a lot of time in the sun and that did not help. Now my hands are full of lines and age spots. Is there anything I can do to reverse these signs of aging?
- Katherine
Dear Katherine,
The sun definitely accelerates the aging process, but over the last few years research has uncovered many discoveries that can actually help with the appearance of aging skin whether it is on your face, your body, or your hands. If you prefer a less invasive method of repairing the skin (takes more time though) there are topical products that can help repair damaged skin and lighten age spots, like AHA (Lactic acid), hydroquinone, Retin-A, and Renova. Research also shows that taking certain vitamins can be extremely helpful, things like vitamin C with bioflavonoids, pantothenic acid (vitamin B5), vitamin B complex, colostrum, and chlorella. For those who want instant gratification there are chemical peels and laser treatments that remove the skins top layers, eliminating the dark spots and wrinkles. If you choose one of the latter methods, be sure to start a good skin care regime right after the skin has healed to help protect the skin from further damage. My recommendation includes daily application of lactic acid (12% AHA), a moisturizer, and a good sunscreen, along with daily vitamins.
