How Can I Control My Oily Skin?
Dear Karen,
I am so frustrated! What do you do with out of control oil that appears on your
face? Every year I dread September. It is usually the hottest month of the year
and this year seems to be no different. As the temperature increases, so does
the oil on my face. The oil can be so heavy that it feels extremely slippery to
the touch. The heat also causes me to perspire more. Mix the sweat with the oil
and the picture is not pretty. Huge red blemishes appear almost daily. I am so
aggravated and embarrassed by my appearance that I don’t want to be seen in
public. I only go out when I must – work, etc. I know I can’t control the
weather, but there must be something I can do to take control of the oil. I am
tired of hiding from the world. I want to live a full life. Please help!

Dear Sheena,
No one should ever hide from living his or her life to the fullest and that
includes you. Although weather may have something to do with your skin condition
getting worse, the odds are that your skin problem being chronic is due to
something else, like hormones, medicine, stress, vitamins, food allergies, or
skin care or makeup products. The first thing to do is to make a checklist and
evaluate what new things you are doing. Are you on new medicine, skin care
products, or vitamin supplements? Next, check your diet any new foods that you
might have eaten lately. If you haven’t made any changes, then it is time to
call your physician and ask him to check your hormones. If your testosterone
level is high, it can cause breakouts. The hot weather helps aggravate it and
the increased oil will cause more breakouts.
It is important to use skin care treatments to help the skin eliminate old skin
and keep the pores unclogged. Try using lactic acid AHA (12%) and retinol. They
will also help stimulate collagen production, smoothing out lines and any scars.
These two products are a must throughout your life to help the skin’s texture
stay smooth and young looking. It is also important to stay away from heavy
creams and oils. Look for a moisturizer like KDJ’s Forever Younger Moisturizer
that has franesol to help balance the skin’s hydration level and hyaluronic acid
to hydrate the skin to keep it healthy and moist without oil. This moisturizer
also contains vitamin C and chlorella to help firm and promote collagen
production to smooth lines and refine the skin’s texture. The key to a healthy
complexion is to know your skin – you can control it’s outcome.
